Dr Gabriel Benarkuu’s (Chairman, Coalition of NGOs in Health) submission on the construction of additional hospitals by the President in his address on Sunday.

Speaking to Joy New, Dr Benarkuu indicated that the decision of the President in his announcement to ghanaians to build to build 88 district-based hospitals and additional 6 regional hospitals is a bold one.
He also indicated that a research conducted for 3years now indicates that the performance of the health ministry under the manifesto of the current government is 33% of delivery which also adds up to making the President’s decision a bold one.

He said however that, the information to ghanaians is not comprehensive enough and this has called for questioning and public scrutining. He emphasized that what is missing is how much the government will use and the standard of the hospital the government is talking about.

Against this background, Dr Benarkuu put forth the following; recommendations

  1. Draws the attention of the health ministry that anytime the President is announcing a strategic investment, they should put an estimate and justify why that amount is needed to avoid the public from asking questions.
  2. About 55 hospitals which are either not completed, completed and not commissioned or abandoned should be completed and put to use.
  3. He also dvised that the information from the President should be much more comprehensive, inclusive, and a bit technical before it is announced.
